The Coming Blood Moons

Blood Moons

The Four Blood Moons: Do They Have Prophetic Significance?

Much discussion and speculation has come about as of late regarding the coming "Blood Moons", a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses scheduled to appear in the Spring and Fall of 2014-2015 (two eclipses per year). According to NASA, these astronomical events are known as lunar tetrads, and they are somewhat common; a total of 142 lunar tetrads have taken place over the past 5,000 years. What makes the Blood Moons of 2014-2015 particularly significant is that the occurrences of these lunar eclipses coincide with the Jewish feasts of Passover and Succoth (in Spring and Fall respectively) in both 2014 and 2015. This convergence of events is extremely rare, having only occurred three other times within the past 500 years, and seven times total since the time of Jesus (Yeshua).

Astounding "Coincidences"?

Perhaps the most striking aspect of these lunar tetrads is that the past three occurrences have not only coincided with the Jewish feasts of Passover and Succoth, but they have also been characterized by major events happening in the history of the nation of Israel. According to NASA, the dates of the most recent three lunar tetrads have been 1492-93, 1948-49 and 1967-68. As any historian will tell you, each of these three dates are marked by key events in Jewish history. Below is a basic overview of what happened on the dates of the past three lunar tetrads:

  • 1492-93: On the heels of the Spanish Inquisition, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella issued a joint edict known as the Alhambra Decree (also referred to as the Edict of Expulsion) in January of 1492, which ordered the Jews to be expelled from Spain. This paved the way for an Italian Jew named Christopher Columbus to set sail for the New World in 1492, in hopes of finding a new homeland for the displaced Jews. The New World (i.e., modern-day America) would eventually house the largest population of Jewish people of any country in the world.

  • 1948-49: After the atrocities of the Holocaust, the Jewish people experienced a redemptive triumph when Israel was officially recognized as a nation in May of 1948.

  • 1967-68: On June 7th, 1967, Jerusalem was recaptured by Israel during the Six Day War, an armed conflict that defied impossible odds. Large areas of Judea and Samaria were recovered as well, increasing their overall borders.

The fact that these lunar tetrads have repeatedly occurred on the dates of key events in the nation of Israel is extremely suggestive of a phenomenon that may again repeat itself in the near future. Chuck Missler, one of the foremost Bible experts of our generation, often says that "To the Gentile mind, prophecy deals with predicting future events, but to the Jewish mind, prophecy is pattern." This pattern of lunar tetrads appearing on the Passover and Succoth feasts has occurred a total of seven times since the time of Jesus, with the "eighth time" scheduled to happen in 2014-2015. Interestingly enough, the number eight in the Bible represents "new beginnings". The book of First Peter talks about how "eight souls" were saved during Noah's flood (1 Peter 3:20), from which God made a "new beginning", or a new order of things, for the human race. Exodus 22:29-30 explains how the firstborns (a new beginning or a new life) were to be given to God on the eighth day. Under Levitical law, lepers were to be presented to the priests for cleansing on the eighth day (Leviticus 14:23), symbolizing a new beginning after being healed of leprosy. Several other examples in the Scriptures indicate the connection between an eighth time and a new beginning. Could this be the beginning of a new era for the nation of Israel? Could it be the beginning of something that will alter the course of history? Of course, the only thing we can do at this point is speculate and keep our eyes peeled, but we do need to understand what God is communicating to us through the movements of the heavenly bodies.

What Does the Bible Say About All of This?

As with all matters of prophecy, it is extremely important that we do not jump to conclusions, but rather keep a watchful eye and stay as close to the scriptures as possible. While the unfolding of these types of events is no doubt exciting and intriguing, ultimately it will only turn out to be whatever God has preordained it to be; nothing more, nothing less. There are, however, strong suggestions in the scriptures regarding the blood moons, one of the most famous of which is Joel 2:30-31:

And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

There are quite a few scriptures in the New Testament that suggest that Jesus placed importance upon being aware of the "signs of the times". He rebuked the Pharisees with the following statements in Matthew 16:1-3:

The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, "When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?"

Jesus evidently believed that certain times and seasons on God's calendar were marked by particular signs. The most obvious signs would be the fulfillment of the prophetic scriptures in real-life events, such as his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on a donkey in Matthew 21:1-11, which was a direct fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9. When Jesus was explaining the signs of the end times to His disciples in Mark 13:24, He mentioned some significant heavenly signs as well:

But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light...

It is important to note that there are several different schools of thought regarding the timeline of end time events, including the order in which the Rapture and the Tribulation will take place, but the particular details of these events are beyond the scope of this website. We are simply pointing out that many times God will use the movements of the heavenly bodies to signal certain key events on Earth, as has been historically proven by the lunar tetrads. As a matter of fact, God stated His intention for the creation of the sun and moon in Genesis 1:14:

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.

The Hebrew word for "signs" in Genesis 1:14 literally means "a signal, beacon, flag, omen, or monument". In other words, it's a tool for visual communication. God used the sun and moon to signal key events several times in the scriptures (e.g., the star in the East signifying the birth of the Messiah), and He has definitely done so in His dealings with the Jewish people in modern history.

In a recent interview with Fox News, Cornerstone Church Pastor John Hagee gave some eye-opening insights regarding the coming blood moons of 2014-2015. Below is the video of this interview:

John Hagee has written a book entitled Four Blood Moons: Something is About to Change. This book goes into extensive detail regarding the four blood moons and their significance in the times in which we live. To purchase a copy of Hagee's book from, simply click this link.

As mentioned in the video above, two blood moons will occur on the Jewish feasts of Passover and Succoth (a.k.a. the Feast of Tabernacles) in this year (2014), and two blood moons will occur on Passover and Succoth in 2015 as well. Again, this is not speculation; this data has also been confirmed by NASA's own projections. Below are the dates of each feast in which a blood moon will appear:

Blood Moon Dates

April 15, 2014: Jewish Passover
October 8, 2014: Feast of Succoth (Tabernacles)
April 4, 2015: Jewish Passover
September 28, 2015: Feast of Succoth (Tabernacles)

It is important to make a distinction between the occurrences of regular blood moons and the lunar tetrad that will take place in 2014-2015. Blood moons, also known as "harvest moons", are not rare occurrences in and of themselves; they occur on a cyclical basis. The moon gives off a reddish color due to the relation between the positions of the sun, earth and moon during a lunar eclipse. The moon, when reflecting the sun's light and viewed through the "filter" of the earth's atmosphere, appears red. It is a much more rare event when four consecutive blood moons occur in back-to-back years, as will happen in 2014-2015; this is known as a lunar tetrad. What makes the blood moons of 2014-2015 exceptionally rare is that the dates that comprise this lunar tetrad just happen to coincide with the dates of Passover and Succoth (a.k.a. the Feast of Tabernacles) in both years. We have already mentioned this above, but we wanted to emphasize this distinction due to the potential for misunderstanding; we know that blood moons in and of themselves are no big deal beyond being just cool to look at. But when you have a lunar tetrad (four consecutive blood moons), occurring on key Jewish feast days, and for the past three occurrences they have marked very significant events in the nation of Israel, there may be something to it. Again, we would not be foolish enough to declare any definite prophecies or predictions; we simply believe that these events warrant our attention, and that we should keep a watchful eye on world events during this time.

Keep an Eye on Israel

Interestingly enough, the Obama Administration has issued a statement that a two-state solution must be achieved by March 15, 2014. This solution will include a mandate for Israel to give up some of its land. The language of the statement is quite forceful, as it emphasized that there "will be" a solution by the deadline. As has historically been the case, Israel is once again receiving international pressure to give up land that it rightfully owns. The persecution of Israel by its hostile neighbors continues, and unfortunately the current administration is not exactly favorable to Israel's cause.

Israeli Economics and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett recently pointed out the urgency of the Israel-Palestinian peace talks, noting that a reversion to the 1967 borders would mean "the division of Jerusalem; giving up the Mount of Olives where Menachem Begin, Rav Kook, and Eliezer Ben-Yehuda are buried; and giving up the Western Wall, the Temple Mount, and the Old City." In light of the coming completion of the peace talks (and, presumably, some sort of "solution"), it will be interesting to see what types of events may be marked by the lunar tetrad of 2014-2015.

The Blood Moons: Studies by Mark Biltz

Mark Biltz, pastor of El Shaddai Ministries International, was one of the first to discover the link between the blood moons and the Jewish feasts. He has conducted extensive research into the topic, not only detailing the significance of the lunar tetrads but also showing how certain solar eclipses have also coincided with Jewish feast days. He has published a ton of information on the subject of the blood moons, and he is releasing a book in March of 2014 entitled Blood Moons: Decoding the Imminent Heavenly Signs. To order the book on Amazon, click here.

Pastor Biltz offers a plethora of information about the blood moons on his website. He has created a diagram that shows not only the timeline of the blood moons in relation to the 2014-2015 Hebrew feast calendar, but he also highlights the fact that there are solar eclipses that correlate to Hebrew feast days as well. Below is a timeline that illustrates these facts:

Discerning the Times and Seasons

As we stated earlier, we do not dare to predict any specific events, as most end-time prophetic claims either turn out to be slightly inaccurate or just completely wrong (ever heard of "88 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Be in 1988"?). We want to emphasize that we are NOT making prophecies or predictions of any  kind. Something awesome may happen over the span of this lunar tetrad, but it is also possible that absolutely nothing will happen. We are simply saying that in light of the fact that the three most recent lunar tetrads have occurred at very key dates in the history of the Jewish people (and the nation of Israel), it may be worth it to keep a close eye on Israel and world events during this unique period of time in which we live.
